Bribery Act – fee remissions

10 April 2014

We note that the ISC has recently obtained a legal opinion from an education and employment barrister, Oliver Hyams, on the Bribery Act and certain types of fee remissions. The legal opinion provides comfort to Heads and schools that there is no risk of inadvertently infringing the Bribery Act in offering or accepting fee discounts. This accords with the advice we have been giving to schools. Mark Lucas (who has been advising schools on this issue) will be addressing the issue at our forthcoming Forum for Independent Schools (29 April) and giving practical advice on how to ensure that schools deal correctly with fee discounts that are offered and accepted.
